Charles S. Kinney, FACHE
Charles S. Kinney FACHE is President and CEO of The Westerly Hospital in Westerly RI, a 125-bed community hospital along the coast of Rhode Island on the Connecticut border.
Charlie has been in healthcare administration for 30 years, and, as a native of Cambridge, Mass., is pleased to be back in New England after career moves that brought him to Florida and Batavia, N.Y.
Prior to accepting his current position in July 2004, Charlie was President and CEO of United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia. Over the years, Charlie has earned a reputation as an expert in turning around hospitals experiencing fiscal problems.
In Batavia, he completed the merger of Genesee Memorial Hospital and St. Jerome’s Hospital to create United Memorial, which emerged as a financially sound facility to continue serving the residents of Genesee County. While at United Memorial, Charlie implemented quality assurance programs that earned special recognition from the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.
Charlie served as President and CEO of Martha’s Vineyard Hospital from 1997 to 1999, taking the 24-bed facility out of bankruptcy to profitability in that time.
“The issue for all community hospitals is how to keep a small hospital viable in the environment of healthcare and insurance issues today,” Kinney says. “You can do it,there’s no question, but it’s a challenge and you’ve got to bring everyone together to do it. No one person has all the answers.”
From 1991 to 1997 Kinney served as an executive in various capacities with the Daughters of Charity National Health System based in Linthicum, MD including, Executive Vice President of St. Vincent’s Ambulatory Care, Inc. in Jacksonville, Fla., and CEO of the 183-bed Riverside Hospital, also in Jacksonville.
Kinney was President of Tobey Hospital in Wareham, MA from 1983 to 1991 and held a variety of administrative positions with the Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington, MA from 1974 to 1983.
Charlie earned his MS in Health Services Administration from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and a Masters of Education from the former Boston State College where he also earned a BS in Science and Mathematics.
